Is shoveling really what’s causing your injuries or are there other underlying mechanisms that may be contributing to your discomfort. Why is it that some people end up in crippling pain from a night of shoveling and some walk away with a little muscle soreness from the great workout they got?
Underlying postural and biomechanical issues can cause your body to have areas of weakness. This is very common and when these are present it does not take a lot to injury one’s self. Now, let’s add a few blizzards and countless hours of shoveling to the mix, it’s no wonder so many of us are in pain.
Poor posture is very common and most of us do not know what to do to fix it. We can only consciously keep ourselves up straight for so long. It allows our joints to move in their proper plane of motion and maintain stability in all areas including the proper signaling to the brain and then from the brain back down to the body.
I can’t tell you how many patients present with injuries from very minor activities (or no activity at all for that matter). These injuries can range from a minor muscle strain to a disc herniation both can be very disruptive to your daily activity and can take weeks to several months to fully heal. Most of us do not have this kind of time to be in pain and unable to go about our normal day.
